Tips to Make Wearing Braces More Comfortable

Aug 10 • 2 minute read

When you first get braces or have them adjusted, they might feel uncomfortable for a few days. This adjustment period is perfectly normal, but there are ways to help make your braces more comfortable.

The following tips can help make your braces more comfortable:

Talk to Your Dentist or Orthodontist

If your braces are uncomfortable, don’t suffer in silence. The first week can take some getting used to, but if they’re quite uncomfortable after this period, talk to your dentist or orthodontist about it. They may be able to make adjustments so your braces are more comfortable and offer tips that can help you. In addition, make sure to call your dentist or orthodontist if you have bleeding, pain that interferes with your sleep, discomfort that lasts more than five days after an adjustment, or extreme sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

Apply Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a great tool for covering brackets that are bothering the inside of your lips or wires that are poking the back of your mouth. This product forms a barrier between your braces and your mouth. Just rub a small amount between your fingers until it becomes soft and stick it to the part of your braces that’s bothering you, making sure it adheres to the area. Make sure to remove the wax before brushing your teeth.

Rinse with Salt Water

Rinsing your mouth with salt water can help reduce discomfort and inflammation and help any sores heal more quickly. Add about half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth with the solution for 30 seconds.

Eat Cold and Soft Foods

Cold, soft foods can help ease your discomfort, especially in the first few days after getting braces or having them adjusted. Ice cream or a chilled smoothie can help lessen your pain, and soft foods like pasta, soup, and yogurt are easier to handle when your mouth is still adjusting to braces.

Use Pain Relievers

An over-the-counter pain relief product like ibuprofen can help reduce soreness and inflammation. Be sure to talk to your dentist or orthodontist about how many you can take and how long it’s safe to use them.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Food can get stuck within the brackets of your braces, so you should practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after every meal, removing any food that’s stuck. You should floss once a day. These habits will prevent bacteria growth, which can cause cavities or decay and make your braces and mouth feel less comfortable.

Limit Discomfort While Straightening Your Smile

Braces can cause some discomfort, particularly when you first get them or when your dentist or orthodontist makes adjustments. However, there are steps you can take to make them more comfortable. By following the tips outlined above, you can maximize your comfort and be on your way toward a healthy smile!
